File RTI in Gujarat — 2026 guide

Gujarat accepts RTI at Central (rtionline.gov.in, Rs 10), State (Rs 20 in person or via iKhedut / department portal), and local-body (AMC, SMC, VMC, etc., Rs 20) levels. Gujarati, Hindi, and English are accepted under §4(3). The Gujarat State Information Commission (GSIC) sits in Gandhinagar. State fee is Rs 20 — higher than most states. Practical response times 30-45 days.

⚠️ DPDP Rules, 2025 (14 Nov 2025) amended Section 8(1)(j) of the RTI Act — public-interest override now under Section 8(2). Read the note →

Gujarat State Information Commission

  • Address: 1st Floor, Block No. 6, New Secretariat, Gandhinagar-382010
  • Website: https://gic.gujarat.gov.in (Gujarati / English)
  • Second Appeal: within 90 days of FAA decision

Key Gujarat-specific points

  • Rs 20 State fee — higher than most states. Court-fee stamps (affixed on plain paper) or Demand Draft acceptable; some departments also accept online via e-Nagar or department portals.
  • Gujarati filing: §4(3) permits; Gujarati is fully accepted without applicant-side translation.
  • iKhedut (https://ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in) is a subsidy/scheme tracking portal for farmers — not a primary RTI route.
  • Gujarat's “strong §4” history: many departments maintain good §4(1)(b) disclosure — check first before filing a §6 RTI.
  • Gujarat HC pleadings ruling: per Gujarat HC 2019, third-party cannot obtain HC pleadings via RTI — use certified-copies procedure under CPC.

  • “Use iKhedut / e-Nagar” — those are optional portals; §6 paper/in-person filing is your statutory right.
  • “Records with Mamlatdar/Taluka” — §6(3) transfer within 5 days.
  • “§8(1)(j) personal” — post-DPDP 2025, check the actual scope.
